Mingo Creek resident says construction debris eyesore

BY DENISE SHERMAN, Staff Writer
KNIGHTDALE - On his daily walk around his neighborhood in Mingo Creek, Raymond Rivera spotted an eyesore - a lot on Howdenshire Run with huge piles of cement and concrete boulders.
"People here a very quiet and they keep their yards up," said Rivera, a retired law enforcement officer. "That's why it stands out. I've never seen that around our community."

Rivera said he immediately called the town of Knightdale to complain and sent an e-mail to the Fred Smith Company, the developer of Mingo Creek to see if the mess was construction debris.

Rivera said Town Manager Seth Lawless told him code enforcement officer Ken Tyndall would follow up on the complaint. Rivera said the developer didn't respond.

"Construction is going on at Hodge Road and Mingo Bluff," said Rivera. "There are homes being built there, but they have dumpsters for debris that results from houses that are being built. We're not talking about small pieces of wood. This is boulders and slabs of cement."

It made Rivera wonder if a developer from outside Mingo Creek was coming in and dumping construction debris.

"It's horrible you live in a place that people are using for a dumping ground," he said. "It's not in our yard, but it's right down the street. You see a sign that says 'Home for Sale.' You see that big dumping ground and say, 'Yeah, I really want to move here.'...Whoever is responsible for it should come clean it up."

Clay Jenkins, the property manager for the Fred Smith Company, said the concrete is the company's construction debris that workers will remove after another job is complete.

"It's concrete on one lot where we've been hauling some broken up concrete we had to replace. That's pretty much it," said Jenkins. "It's just broken up concrete and where we've been putting it and removing it for years."

Tyndall said he is trying to reach Jenkins to talk to him about the lot.

"All these guys are pretty good about working with the town," he said. "What happens in a subdivision is they call us and have a house that's ready to be inspected and you have a big crack in the curbing or a problem with driveways or sidewalks that were poured and didn't set right. They have to take it out and replace it."

Rivera is just ready for it to be gone.

"It attracts vermin and snakes," he said. "It's ugly, very ugly and unsafe. We have kids in the area. They go for a walk and they play in that stuff. It's not good. There's no fence around it."

Year 2~Day 83 +054/366: Saturday's for Work and Pampering

The RV'ers, church members, and out-of-town church members worked at The Rock Church installing dry wall and helping the insulation company with clean up.

I drove by the church after having my brows, upper lip, and chin waxed. Mary Clark styled my hair differently by using the blow dryer and curling iron.

After taking many photos of the men/woman working, I stopped by U.S. Nails for a pedicure. I especially wanted them to remove a corn from the side of my left foot.

It's been a good day, but I still haven't graded any papers yet or cleaned all the mud off my tennis shoes from tromping through the church yard to get photos of the workers.
